Over 2.5 Million Muslims Embark on Historic Hajj Pilgrimage in Makkah

Makkah, Saudi Arabia – The annual Hajj pilgrimage, the largest gathering of Muslims worldwide, is set to make history this year as over 2.5 million pilgrims flock to the holy sites in Makkah. Despite the soaring costs and higher prices, the immense crowds are expected to break attendance records, reflecting the unwavering devotion of believers.

Challenges Faced by Hajj Pilgrims

Limited Options and Financial Struggles

Palestinian pilgrim Abu Anas Abu Rahal, like many others, faced limited options and financial challenges as he embarked on his week-long stay in Makkah. With the minimum cost of Hajj reaching 26,000 riyals ($7,000), finding affordable accommodations became a daunting task for Abu Rahal. Despite choosing the cheapest package available, the 65-year-old pilgrim had difficulty covering the expenses, which included transportation and shared hotel rooms.

Tough Economic Conditions

Abu Rahal expressed his disappointment, stating, “I was hoping for a more affordable option, perhaps a hotel farther away that could be half the price. The current prices and choices offered are quite embarrassing.” He noted that pilgrims paid the same amount last year for a package that included flights. While the significance of the holy mosque and the opportunity to witness the Kaaba make the journey worthwhile, the prevailing economic conditions make it extremely challenging for pilgrims.

Record-Breaking Pilgrimage Season

Saudi Arabia has already witnessed a significant influx of pilgrims, with more than 1.6 million individuals arriving for the 2023 pilgrimage season as of Sunday. The official commencement of the gathering is scheduled for Tuesday, marking the beginning of the extraordinary Hajj experience.

Economic Significance of Hajj

Hajj is a mandatory religious duty for financially capable Muslims, and it serves as a major source of revenue for the Saudi government. The income generated from lodging, transportation, fees, and gifts provided to pilgrims contributes substantially to the country’s economy. In 2019, the kingdom earned approximately $12 billion annually from the 2.6 million Hajj pilgrims and an additional 19 million visitors for Umrah, a form of pilgrimage that can be undertaken throughout the year.

Spiritual Journey Amidst Rising Prices

The Hajj pilgrimage holds profound spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide, motivating them to embark on this sacred journey despite the escalating costs. Thousands of pilgrims, dressed in white robes, alongside women predominantly clad in black, diligently circumambulate the Kaaba in Makkah’s Holy Mosque. Security officers closely monitor the rituals, ensuring the safety of the pilgrims. Green barriers have been strategically placed to direct the crowds and prevent stampedes, which have claimed numerous lives in the past.

Faith-driven Commerce

The Hajj pilgrimage season not only fulfills the spiritual aspirations of the faithful but also provides a thriving market for the merchants of Makkah. The demand for prayer beads, in particular, has seen a significant surge, surpassing previous years, including pre-pandemic times. Abdullah Abbas, a shop manager, mentioned, “The demand for prayer beads is way higher than in previous years, including before the pandemic. All nationalities buy beads.”
