Good News! Electricity Price Reduction Likely for All Pakistanis
Islamabad: Consumers across the country may soon get some relief, as a significant electricity price reduction is expected to be announced shortly.
According to sources, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has concluded its hearing on a request filed by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA). The outcome is a likely decrease in the power tariff by Rs. 1.69 per unit.
This reduction, once officially notified by NEPRA after reviewing the data, will apply to all electricity consumers in Pakistan, including customers of K-Electric in Karachi.
This welcome change is expected to provide a collective relief of up to 23 billion rupees and will be visible in the electricity bills issued in September.
Why Does the Price of Electricity Change Every Month?
Many people wonder why their electricity bills fluctuate even when their usage is the same. This monthly change is due to something called the Fuel Charge Adjustment (FCA).
- What is FCA? Electricity in Pakistan is produced using various fuels like furnace oil, natural gas (LNG), coal, and nuclear energy. The prices of these fuels change in the international market. The FCA is the mechanism used to pass on these fluctuations in fuel costs to the consumer. If the fuel used to generate electricity was cheaper in a particular month, you get a price reduction. If it was more expensive, the price goes up.
- Who Decides the Price? The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) buys electricity from all the power generation companies on behalf of the distribution companies (like LESCO, IESCO, etc.). Every month, the CPPA submits a request to NEPRA, the country’s main power regulator. This request details the actual cost of fuel used for generating electricity. NEPRA then holds a public hearing to verify these costs and decides the final adjustment that appears in your bill.
This potential electricity price reduction for the upcoming bills means that the cost of fuel for generating power was lower than previously estimated, and this benefit is now being passed on to the public.
Key Points:
- An electricity price reduction of Rs. 1.69 per unit is likely for all consumers in Pakistan, including those served by K-Electric.
- The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has completed its hearing on the matter.
- If approved, this will provide a total relief of around 23 billion rupees to the public.
- The change will be reflected in the electricity bills for the month of September.
- This monthly price change is due to the Fuel Charge Adjustment (FCA), which varies with the cost of fuel used for power generation.
