Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani Writes Letter to Swedish Parliament Speaker Andreas Norlen Over Quran Desecration
Islamabad: Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani has penned a letter to the Speaker of the Swedish Parliament, Andreas Norlen, addressing the recent incident of Quran desecration in Sweden. In the letter, Sanjrani emphasized the significance of interfaith harmony and the need to dispel misunderstandings about Islam.
Promoting Tolerance and Empathy
Sanjrani, in his letter on Tuesday, highlighted the responsibility of representatives to guide and educate the people, fostering an environment that promotes tolerance, respect, and empathy among different faiths, religions, and communities. He urged the Swedish parliament, known as the Riksdag, to acknowledge the importance of interfaith harmony and play a role in dispelling misconceptions about Islam.
Global Stability and Interconnectedness
Recognizing the importance of interfaith harmony for regional and global stability, Sanjrani offered to travel to Sweden and address the Riksdag personally if deemed appropriate by the Swedish speaker. He emphasized that in the modern era of global interconnectedness, there should be no room for abuse and desecration of holy figures, scriptures, and religious sentiments of any community.
Appreciation for Swedish Government’s Response
Sanjrani commended the Swedish government for unequivocally condemning such actions as Islamophobic and clarifying that they do not reflect Swedish state policies. However, he expressed concerns about the long road ahead in achieving world peace, tolerance, and interfaith harmony. As a representative of a nation committed to these principles, Sanjrani believes that parliamentarians and world leaders can collaborate to prevent such disturbing actions.
The Stature of Other Religions in Islam
Sanjrani stressed that Islam acknowledges and respects other religions by recognizing the preceding prophets and their holy books from the Abrahamic traditions. Despite this, frequent Islamophobic incidents continue to occur, often under the guise of freedom of expression. The disrespect shown towards Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the Holy Quran deeply hurts Muslims. Sanjrani emphasized the need to understand and acknowledge this reality, taking necessary steps at national and global levels to prevent such acts.
Dispelling Misconceptions and Promoting Understanding
The recent desecration of the Holy Quran, like previous incidents, stems from a lack of understanding and misconceptions about religion. Sanjrani called for collective efforts to educate ourselves and others, promoting understanding, tolerance, and interfaith harmony. It is essential to address these underlying issues to prevent the recurrence of such acts.
Background: Quran Desecration in Sweden
The letter from Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani followed the latest incident of Quran desecration in Sweden. A man named Salwan Momika, originally from Iraq, set a copy of the sacred book ablaze outside a mosque in the country’s capital city on the eve of Eid ul Adha. This act of sacrilege occurred as Muslims worldwide celebrated the Eid ul Adha holiday and the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah drew to a close.
