Pakistan Braces for Monsoon Rains: Flood Alert in Twin Cities
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a forecast warning that monsoon rains are expected to hit the country from July 3 to 8, with the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi at risk of urban flooding.
According to the PMD, moist currents from the Arabian Sea are likely to reach the upper parts of Pakistan, accompanied by a westerly wave entering the region from July 3 onwards.
The Met Office has urged authorities to stay vigilant as heavy rainfall may cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, and Lahore between July 4 and 7.
Vulnerable areas such as Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, and hilly regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are also prone to landslides during this period.
From July 3 to 8, the PMD predicts rain, wind, and thundershowers in various parts of the country, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, and Gilgit Baltistan. Other areas to be affected include Chitral, Swat, Abbottabad, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Lahore, and Karachi.
The statement further warns of heavy falls and the possibility of flash floods in Dera Ghazi Khan, northeast Balochistan, and hill torrent areas.
Farmers are advised to consider the weather forecast and plan their activities accordingly. Meanwhile, tourists are urged to exercise caution during this wet spell.
