Pakistan Considers Blocking Social Media Platforms Amid Incitement Concerns
ISLAMABAD: In light of recent incidents of violence and incitement, the Pakistani government is contemplating the option to block social media platforms, including Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif emphasized that the government has the authority to exercise this option at any given time.
The decision comes in the aftermath of the May 9 vandalism carried out by supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), following the arrest of their party chairman, Imran Khan. The PTI supporters caused extensive damage to both private and public property, including military installations.
Citing social media as a significant source of incitement, the government had previously blocked these platforms and even suspended internet services across the country for nearly four days. Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah stated that the party’s activities, including planning and abuse, were primarily conducted on social media platforms.
Defence Minister Asif defended the government’s stance, highlighting that social media platforms are regulated in China and Europe as well. He acknowledged the role of these platforms in inciting people, which led to the violent actions witnessed on May 9.
Furthermore, Minister Asif expressed appreciation for the accountability process undertaken against those involved in the attacks on military installations and martyrs’ memorials. The army has already dismissed three officers, including a lieutenant general, for failing to protect the military installations on that day.
The government is also exploring the possibility of trying civilians involved in such incidents in military courts. Although there are legal obstacles, the government is determined to overcome them in order to ensure justice and maintain law and order.
