Israeli Drone Strikes in West Bank’s Jenin Result in Eight Deaths and Dozens Injured
Jenin, West Bank – In a devastating attack, the Israeli army conducted drone strikes in the city of Jenin, resulting in the tragic death of eight residents and leaving around 50 people injured, with several in critical condition, according to the Palestinian health ministry.
This incident comes just two weeks after a brutal Israeli army raid in the Jenin refugee camp, which claimed the lives of several individuals and further heightened tensions in the region.
The Israeli army stated that its forces targeted a “joint operations center,” which served as a command post for the local militant group known as the “Jenin Brigade.”
The West Bank, including the Jenin area, is under partial control of the Palestinian Authority. However, the increasing violence perpetrated by Israelis, particularly under the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his ultra-nationalist allies, has exacerbated the suffering of the Palestinians.
The United Nations has expressed grave concern over the escalating violence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, urging all parties involved to exercise restraint and restore calm in the region.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres conveyed his deep sadness regarding the loss of life and injuries resulting from the recent violence. He called upon Israeli and Palestinian leaders to take immediate steps to de-escalate the situation.
The current wave of violence raises fears of a further escalation, potentially leading to a full-scale conflict. The international community has called for an end to the hostilities and emphasized the importance of both sides returning to the negotiating table to seek a peaceful resolution to the longstanding conflict.
The Israel-Palestine conflict has persisted since the Six-Day War of 1967, with Israel occupying the West Bank, where approximately 490,000 Israelis reside in settlements deemed illegal under international law.
The Palestinians, aspiring to establish an independent state, demand a complete Israeli withdrawal from all territories occupied during the Six-Day War and the dismantling of Jewish settlements.
Despite these demands, Prime Minister Netanyahu has consistently pledged to “strengthen settlements” and has shown no interest in reviving peace talks, which have remained dormant since 2014.
In a separate incident near the city of Ramallah in the West Bank, a Palestinian youth lost his life due to Israeli fire. The ongoing violence has tragically claimed numerous lives, including innocent Palestinian civilians.
