Government Decides Against Notifying Latest Census for Upcoming General Elections
ISLAMABAD: In a recent development, the government has opted not to proceed with the notification of the latest census data and has decided to conduct the upcoming general elections based on the population count from 2017, as reported by The News on Sunday.
Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah’s Statement on “Naya Pakistan”
Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, while appearing on Geo News’ show “Naya Pakistan” on Saturday night, revealed the government’s decision. He explained that the Council of Common Interests (CCI) needed to complete its term. If the new census was not notified by that time, the elections would be held based on the figures of the previous census and delimitation.
“The government has decided it will not notify this [new census] and when the assemblies will be dissolved after completing their terms, the Election Commission of Pakistan will be bound to conduct the elections on the basis of the previous census,” he said.
Concerns and Dissatisfaction Over the New Census
When asked about the reservations expressed by Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), a government ally in the Centre, regarding the 2017 census, Sanaullah stated that the party was dissatisfied with the new digital census and did not accept it. Additionally, there were complaints about the new census in Balochistan.
Importance of Consensus on Census Results
Emphasizing the importance of a consensus on census results, Sanaullah asserted that all issues must be addressed and resolved before making any hasty decisions regarding the census. Rushing into such decisions could lead to a controversial situation in the country. Developing a consensus among all political parties would require time and careful consideration.
Progress on Caretaker Prime Minister Nomination
Regarding the consultation process for nominees for the caretaker prime minister, Sanaullah mentioned that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was actively working on the matter. He further added that the process could be completed within a week or 10 days. The prime minister planned to consult with the leader of the opposition and other allies on this matter.
