Coastal areas of Pakistan are on high alert as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning regarding the intensification of Cyclone Biparjoy over the next 24 hours. The cyclonic storm, categorized as “very severe,” is currently positioned approximately 900 kilometers south of Karachi and continues to move in a north/northeastward direction.
Fishing Operations Suspended:
In anticipation of Cyclone Biparjoy, the provincial government has instructed fishing communities to halt their operations for the next five days. This precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of the fishermen and their vessels during the passage of the storm.
PMD’s Update on Cyclone Biparjoy:
According to the PMD, the Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) Biparjoy, located over the east-central Arabian Sea, has maintained its intensity and moved north-northeastward over the past 12 hours. Its current position is at Latitude 16.7°N and Longitude 66.4°E, approximately 910 kilometers south of Karachi, 890 kilometers south of Thatta, and 990 kilometers southeast of Ormara.
Coastal Areas of Pakistan on Alert:
Although the exact track of Cyclone Biparjoy remains uncertain, the coastal areas of Sindh and Balochistan have been placed on high alert. The PMD has highlighted the unpredictability of global forecast models, with some suggesting landfall around the Markan-north Oman coast, while others indicate a path towards the Sindh-Indian Gujarat coastline.
Anticipated Impact and Precautionary Measures:
The PMD advisory warns of rain-thunderstorms with heavy falls and squally winds along the Sindh-Makran coast from the evening/night of June 13 onwards, due to the north-northeast track of Cyclone Biparjoy. In response to this potential impact, the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has released crucial safety guidelines to safeguard ships and port facilities during adverse weather conditions in the Southeast Arabian Sea.
