Australia Doubles Student Visa Fee Amidst Migration Control Efforts
SYDNEY – In a move aimed at curbing soaring migration figures, the Australian government has implemented a substantial 125% increase in the visa fee for international students, raising it from A$710 to A$1,600 effective July 1.
Government Statement and Migration Strategy
Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil emphasized that these changes are designed to enhance integrity within Australia’s international education system and streamline the migration process, making it fairer and more sustainable for the country.
Migration Data and Economic Impact
Recent official data indicated a significant 60% rise in net immigration to a record 548,800 individuals by September 30, 2023. This fee hike positions Australia’s student visa costs notably higher compared to competitors like the United States and Canada.
Visa Rule Amendments
The government also announced closures of visa loopholes that previously facilitated extended stays for foreign students, responding to a surge of over 30% in subsequent student visa applications, surpassing 150,000 in 2022-23.
Sector Response and Economic Concerns
Luke Sheehy, CEO of Universities Australia, expressed concerns over the policy’s potential adverse effects on the economy and university finances, noting the significant contribution of international student fees amounting to A$36.4 billion in the 2022-23 fiscal year.
