Allegations of Islamophobia and Mental Harassment Surround Apple Employee in India
An Indian Muslim employee working at Apple has recently made headlines with claims of facing Islamophobia and mental harassment, leading to his decision to quit the company. These allegations have raised concerns about the company’s commitment to inclusivity and fair treatment of employees. The controversy comes just months after Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, gained attention for launching Apple stores in India, emphasizing the company’s expansion and investment in the country.
Grand Inaugurations and Promises of Inclusivity
In April of this year, Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, personally hosted grand inaugurations for the opening of Apple stores in Mumbai and Delhi, symbolizing the company’s dedication to the Indian market. These openings brought with them significant opportunities for employment, with Apple offering its employees an impressive salary of INR100,000. The company has also been vocal about its inclusive policies, aiming to support diversity and underrepresented minorities while ensuring fair pay practices.
Employee Resignation and Allegations of Misconduct
Khalid Parvez, an employee of Apple in India, recently tendered his resignation, citing a multitude of reasons for his departure. Mental harassment, abusive language, managerial errors, and alleged Islamophobic comments were among the issues he raised. Parvez claims that his complaints were dismissed by the company, leading to his decision to leave. In a LinkedIn post, he expressed his appreciation for the growth opportunities provided by Apple while criticizing the lack of compassion shown by the company’s human resources department during their investigation.
Dismissal and Counter-allegations
Parvez’s post on LinkedIn drew attention as he tagged Tim Cook and the company, seeking redress for his grievances. He alleged that the employee relations team at Apple responded with insensitivity and counter-accusations. Parvez, who had been an employee of Apple under Tim Cook’s leadership for the past decade, claimed that his concerns regarding mental health were belittled. Instead of addressing his complaints, he accused the company of engaging in a cover-up.
A Call for Accountability and Documentation
In his LinkedIn post, Parvez issued a warning to professionals, urging them not to blindly trust companies and to escalate issues beyond regional and national management. He called for individuals to speak up against discrimination, misconduct, abuse, and bullying within corporate environments. Parvez emphasized the importance of documenting incidents and advised his fellow employees not to trust the system without question, particularly at the local level.
