Pakistan Clinches Victory in Opening Test against Sri Lanka, Saud Shakeel’s Double Ton Leads the Way

Pakistan’s cricket team celebrated a remarkable triumph over Sri Lanka in the opening Test match, securing a four-wicket victory to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The outstanding performance came on the final day in Galle, led by Saud Shakeel’s exceptional double century in the first innings.

A Challenging Run-Chase

At the beginning of the final day’s play, Pakistan had a run-chase target of 131 runs, with the score at 48-3. Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq were at the crease, determined to steer their team to victory. Azam showed his prowess, scoring 24 runs off 28 balls, including five fours. However, his innings ended when he was trapped in front of the stumps by Prabath Jayasuriya.

Saud Shakeel’s Heroics

Saud Shakeel, the hero of the match, couldn’t carry his innings to the end and was dismissed after contributing 30 runs from 38 balls. Nonetheless, his exceptional double century in the first innings played a crucial role in setting up Pakistan’s victory. Imam-ul-Haq displayed an impressive performance, remaining unbeaten with a well-earned 50 runs, including four fours and a six.

A Thrilling Finish

In the closing session of the match, Prabath Jayasuriya proved to be a significant threat for Pakistan, claiming two crucial top-order wickets by dismissing Abdullah Shafique (8) and Shan Masood (7). Meanwhile, nightwatchman Nauman Ali’s attempt at a risky second run led to his run-out.

Pakistan’s Brilliant Bowling

Sri Lanka’s second innings came to an end at 279 runs on the fourth day, setting a target of 131 runs for Pakistan to win the match. Pakistan’s bowlers excelled in this innings, with Abrar Ahmed and Nauman Ali taking three wickets each. Shaheen Afridi and Agha Salman contributed with two wickets each. Dhananjaya de Silva, who scored a century in the first innings, was the highest scorer for the home side, making 82 runs.

Shakeel’s Record-Breaking Performance

It’s worth noting that Saud Shakeel achieved a momentous milestone in Tests, scoring his maiden double century during the rain-hit opening match. Pakistan’s first innings ended at 461, thanks to a crucial partnership of 94 runs between Saud Shakeel, who remained not out on an impressive 208, and Naseem Shah, who scored six runs off 78 balls.

Spinners’ Efforts

Spinner Ramesh Mendis stood out with a five-wicket haul, but Shakeel’s partnership with the tailenders proved to be vital. His notable 177-run partnership with Agha Salman, who scored 83, brought Pakistan back into the game after a shaky start at 101-5 in response to Sri Lanka’s 312.
