In a remarkable feat, Novak Djokovic, the Serbian professional tennis star, secured his record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam title and reclaimed the top position in the ATP rankings. Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal, the Spanish player, experienced a significant drop and fell out of the top 100 rankings.

With his victory at the French Open, Djokovic, 36 years old, reached a total of 388 weeks as the world’s number one, ascending two places in the rankings. He defeated his Spanish rival Carlos Alcaraz, 20, in the semi-finals, who had held the top spot until the French Open.

However, Daniil Medvedev from Russia, who was eliminated in the first round of Roland Garros, dropped a spot in the rankings. Casper Ruud from Norway, the beaten finalist, maintained fourth place, with a 40-point lead over Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas.

On the other hand, Rafael Nadal faced a significant decline in rankings due to his absence caused by a long-term hip injury. The fourteen-time French Open winner dropped 121 places to 136th in the ATP rankings.

Novak Djokovic’s Historic Triumph

Novak Djokovic secured his place in history on Sunday by winning his 23rd Grand Slam title, breaking the tie of 22 Slams he shared with his long-time rival, Rafael Nadal. With a dominating performance, Djokovic defeated Casper Ruud of Norway with a score of 7-6 (7/1), 6-3, 7-5, capturing his third French Open victory.

The Serbian player expressed his gratitude and joy, stating, “It’s an incredible feeling to win 23. I’m beyond grateful and blessed to be standing here with so many incredible achievements.” Nadal himself acknowledged Djokovic’s remarkable accomplishment, describing it as “an incredible achievement.”

Djokovic’s triumph at Roland Garros adds to his 10 Australian Open titles, seven at Wimbledon, and three at the US Open. Notably, he is the first man to win all four major tournaments at least three times. Moreover, he is now halfway towards achieving the first calendar Grand Slam since Rod Laver in 1969.

Several tennis legends and prominent figures commended Djokovic’s exceptional skills and mental fortitude. Rod Laver tweeted, “Your skill and unwavering mental fortitude on all surfaces are astonishing.” Djokovic now sets his sights on Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 Grand Slam titles, which he may pursue at the upcoming Wimbledon tournament.

Despite his recent victory, Djokovic shows no signs of slowing down. As the oldest French Open champion, he has won 11 of his Slam trophies after turning 30. Rafael Nadal, a 14-time Roland Garros winner who missed this year’s tournament due to injury, congratulated Djokovic and acknowledged his extraordinary accomplishment.

In a gracious response, Casper Ruud commended Djokovic’s continuous rewriting of tennis history, stating, “Novak, another day, another record for you. And another day you rewrite tennis history once again.”

The significance of Sunday’s event was evident as numerous sports A-listers were drawn to witness the exceptional display of tennis prowess.
