Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made a historic announcement on Sunday as a vessel carrying Russian oil arrived in Karachi, marking a significant moment for the country’s energy sector. PM Shehbaz took to Twitter to express his delight, stating that he had fulfilled another promise to the nation. The arrival of the first cargo of discounted Russian crude oil in Karachi signifies a transformative day for Pakistan.

I have fulfilled another of my promises to the nation. Glad to announce that the first Russian discounted crude oil cargo has arrived in Karachi and will begin oil discharge tomorrow.

New Deal Brings Discounted Russian Oil to Pakistan

In April, Pakistan inked a new deal with Moscow, paving the way for discounted Russian crude oil to be imported into the country. This marked the beginning of a new relationship between Pakistan and Russia in the energy sector. The vessel named Pure Point, a 183-meter-long oil tanker, docked at berth number 2 in the port of Karachi, carrying 45,000 metric tons of oil.

Progress towards Prosperity and Energy Security

The prime minister expressed his joy and emphasized that Pakistan is taking gradual steps towards economic growth, prosperity, and energy security. He commended all those who contributed to making the promise of Russian oil import a reality, terming it a national endeavor. The arrival of this cargo strengthens the nation’s energy infrastructure and enhances affordability.

Logistical Challenges and Delayed Arrival

Initially expected to arrive in Oman on May 27-28, the Russian cargo vessel carrying 100,000 tonnes of crude oil faced technical delays. It reached the Omani port of Duqm on June 7, having encountered various challenges along the way. The vessel’s journey included a wait of 12 days at Egypt’s Suez Canal, causing further delays.

Future Plans and Refining Process

The remaining 50,000 tons of Russian crude oil will be transported to Port Qasim on June 20. Authorities assure the public that the safe and smooth arrival of the cargo will be ensured. The Pakistan Refinery Limited (PRL) has been assigned the task of refining the test cargo of Russian crude oil. The oil will be blended with crude imported from the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Aramco. PRL will submit a comprehensive test report to the government, assessing the quality, yields, and commercial viability of the oil. The test cargo will also provide valuable insights into transportation costs, refining costs, and margins for refineries.

Diversifying Oil Sources to Combat Rising Global Prices

Pakistan, as a response to soaring global oil prices, is actively seeking to diversify its sources of oil imports. Russia, being a major crude oil producer, has offered discounted prices to Pakistan, enabling the country to expand its energy options. Payments for the Russian crude oil will be made in yuan through the Bank of China.

In conclusion, the arrival of the first shipment of Russian oil in Karachi represents a significant milestone for Pakistan’s energy sector. This development will contribute to the country’s economic growth, energy security, and affordability. Pakistan’s strategic partnership with Russia opens doors to new opportunities in the energy market and reinforces the nation’s efforts to diversify its oil imports.
